About Christian Science

Based on Reason and Revelation
Christian Science is a religion of reason and revelation. In harmony with the Bible, it teaches that God is the only creator, and that all that He created is good. If this is true, it follows that sickness and evil, which are not good, can be no part of His creation. Mary Baker Eddy tells us:

Jesus demonstrated the power of Christian Science to heal mortal minds and bodies. But this power was lost sight of, and must again be spiritually discerned, taught, and demonstrated according to Christ’s command, with ‘signs following.’ Its Science must be apprehended by as many as believe on Christ and spiritually understand Truth. (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 110)

Is Christian Science Christian?

What is it to be Christian? To be Christ-like? Is it not to imitate Christ Jesus? What did he do in his brief ministry of three years? He taught, he loved, he patiently endured bitter persecution, he healed all manner of disease, he cast out devils, evil beliefs, he destroyed sin and triumphed over death and the grave.

To do as he did is to be Christ-like, to be Christian. He commanded his disciples to follow him in these demonstrations. Christian Science gives a clear understanding of God and of man made in His image and likeness; and with this understanding we are able to rise above false thinking and its effects. How important, then, to learn to think good and loving thoughts, because they enable us to express goodness in our daily lives.

Christian Science is health-giving, divinely educational, acknowledging but one Mind, one Father-Mother, one family, the brotherhood of man, all heirs of the same affluent God. Is this not Christian?

Is it Science?

For centuries the word science has been so appropriated by materialists and claimed to have relation only to physical causes and their phenomena that quite a shock was felt when it was first applied to religion.

The term science is properly applicable to anything that shows the relations between laws, principles, and systematized facts. Webster defines it as:

“(1.) Ascertained Truth. (2.) Accumulated and ascertained knowledge which has been formulated and systematized with reference to the discovery of truths by the operation of laws. (3.) A collection of the general principles, or leading truths, relating to any subject arranged in systematic order.”

Christian Science fulfills every demand of these definitions—it is provable, demonstrable truth.

In the Christian Science Sentinel of September 13, 1919, we read:

Mrs. Eddy in ‘Rudimental Divine Science,’ on page 1, defines Christian Science as ‘the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony.’ Jesus of Nazareth did his mighty works in obedience to this law of God, healing all manner of sickness and sin and raising the dead. He said to his followers of all time, ‘He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.’ Today, in proportion as Christian Science, ‘the law of God, the law of good,’ is intelligently understood and applied, the demonstration of healing is made manifest, and many living witnesses are saying in the words of the psalmist, ‘Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.’
